The latest piece in the on-going development of Myerscough College’s Preston Campus has been unveiled with the grand opening of a new, state of the art building especially for construction students.

"We thank Worthington’s for their continuous support and contributions to the college over a number of years and our new centre is yet another example of their work which can be seen all over campus" Ann Turner, College Principal & Chief Executive

The Marcus Worthington Construction Skills Centre, based at the main site on St Michael’s Road in Bilsborrow, will become the home for Myerscough College’s construction students, including those on 14-16 vocational courses, amongst other training opportunities on offer.

As part of the college’s £14 million improvement programme, the new centre will provide a base for students to gain vital knowledge and skills in preparation for moving onto either a modern apprenticeship scheme in construction or to study on another full time course. The new centre boasts an impressive set of facilities, including specialist workshops and high-tech, modern areas for students to carry out their work.

Wyre & Preston North MP, Ben Wallace, officially unveiled the plaque in a ceremony on Friday afternoon, in front of assembled guests and dignitaries. Students were on hand to explain and demonstrate various rural skills including including brick laying, fence construction and joinery.

Myerscough College Chief Executive & Principal, Ann Turner, said: ‘’It’s wonderful to be working with such a great team once again. We thank Worthington’s for their continuous support and contributions to the college over a number of years and our new centre is yet another example of their work which can be seen all over campus.’’

‘’The new facility contains industry relevant, first class resources and will further enhance our reputation as being the top land based college in the country.’’

Ben Wallace MP commented: ‘’Myerscough College provide real skills for people to get real jobs across a number of industries. These skills are at a premium in the marketplace and this is another great facility to add to add to an already excellent campus.’’

‘’The Further Education sector is outstanding in Lancashire and institutions such as Myerscough College really lead the way for the rest of the UK. I wish the students who use the new centre good luck in their future studies.’’

Marcus Worthington himself was on hand to oversee the opening of the centre built in his name and said: ‘’Our company and Myerscough College have always worked very well together and it’s a privilege to have been responsible for the Marcus Worthington Construction Skills Centre.’’

‘’As a company we believe in investing in young people. The investment in this project will allow students to train in basic skills which this industry desperately needs and it’s a pleasure to be a major part of the latest phase of the college’s development.’’

Ian Higginbotham is Myerscough’s Chair of governor’s and said:  ‘’Worthington’s have lead the way in this imaginative development and for that we thank them very much. Our great results show that a real difference can be made with the right learning facilities. It’s a real team effort and I applaud our students, staff, governors and of course the contractors themselves. It’s a splendid building.’’
