Garden project a Worthy cause!

A community and environmental project which provides opportunities for disadvantaged people has come up smelling of roses - thanks to the generosity of a kind-hearted building contractor from Garstang!

Marcus Worthington & Co, which is based in Claughton-on-Brock, has saved Piccadilly Garden a cool £10,000 after agreeing to install some bulk storage bunkers completely free of charge at the charity's site in Scotforth, Lancaster.

Steve Neaves, who runs Piccadilly Garden, said: "We are very grateful to Marcus Worthington & Co for this is not just a financial thing, it will also benefit us in many other ways.

"The bays will allow us to store and turn over top soil and manure, before selling it on to the public through our garden centre shop.

"All proceeds from that will then be ploughed straight back into the business, enabling us to buy all sorts of things, from new overalls to much-needed equipment."

Set up 16 years ago to provide training and work experience for people with learning difficulties in the Lancaster area, Piccadilly Garden focuses mainly on horticultural initiatives.

One project involves recycling green garden waste and transforming it into a peat-free compost and mulch, which diverts approximately two tonnes of waste away from landfill sites every week.

Giles Worthington, contracts director at Marcus Worthington & Co, said: "We are very conscious of our responsibilities to the local community and the environment and consider Piccadilly Garden a fantastic project.

"Not only does it provide opportunities for people with learning difficulties, it also helps the environment as well. When we heard about the bays, we were more than happy to help."
